Birds of Tambopata: A Paradise for Birdwatchers

The Tambopata National Reserve, located in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, is one of the world's most spectacular destinations for bird enthusiasts. With over 600 species recorded, this protected area is considered an ornithological biodiversity sanctuary, where each dawn brings a unique natural symphony.

One of the most impressive sights is at the renowned macaw clay lick (collpas de guacamayos), where hundreds of macaws, including the red-and-green macaw (Ara chloropterus), the blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna), and the scarlet macaw (Ara macao), gather at dawn to feed on mineral-rich clay. This natural behavior is vital not only for their digestive health but also provides an unforgettable visual and auditory spectacle.

The most emblematic species that can be observed include:

  • Macaws, parrots, and parakeets: These colorful, noisy, social birds are the vibrant soul of the jungle.
  • Harpy Eagle: The most powerful bird in the Americas. Difficult to see, but possible in primary forests.
  • Amazonian and barn owls: Nocturnal and spotted during guided excursions.
  • Toucans and Aracaris: With their huge, multicolored beaks, they are easy to spot by their song and flight among the treetops.
  • Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin): This prehistoric bird inhabits swampy areas such as Lake Sandoval.
  • Kingfishers, herons, ibises, and cormorants: common in rivers and lakes in the area.
  • Tanagers, honeycreepers, and hummingbirds: These small jewels bring color to every corner of the forest.

Visitors can enjoy guided walks, boat trips, and visits to observation towers in the heart of the jungle where they can see different species in their natural environment. Tambopata is undoubtedly a world-class birdwatching destination, appealing to both experienced observers and travelers seeking to connect with the beauty and freedom of the winged world.

The best time for migratory bird watching in our region is during the months April to June and October to December, when the largest number of species can be observed.

Peru is the second country with the largest number of bird species in the world and the first in endemic species. The diversity of bird species represents 20% of the world's total and more than 62% of the bird species of the southern hemisphere. In addition, the country holds the world record for the highest number of bird sightings in a single day without the aid of motorized vehicles, with 331 in the Department of Madre de Dios.

The official list of birds in Peru has now been expanded to more than 1,800 species, with more than 400 species of birds in Peru having more than one subspecies in the country, adding 1,003 subspecies to the 1,800, for a total of more than 2,803 taxa.

Peru has the highest number of “range-restricted species” (species confined to a range ofless than 50,000 square kilometers, according to Birdlife International) in the Neotropics, and is second in the world.

In Tambopata Peru, there are more than 1,200 species of butterflies, 200 species of mammals, 900 species of frogs, and 1,300 species of birds.

Peru has more macaw collpas than any other country, with the largest mixed flock in the Amazon in southeastern Peru gathering up to 103 species, with more than 70 species present at one time, making these the most complex multi-species collections of any group of organisms in the world. These mega-flocks, consisting of an understory flock, a canopy flock, and a fruiting tree flock, take a long time to assemble each morning.

The different species of parrots take turns visiting a collpa, however up to 10 species of parrots can be seen simultaneously, thus grouping the largest number ofmacaws in a single collpa. Also noteworthy is the presence of the cock of the rock or tunqi (Rupicola peruviana), considered the national bird of Peru.

Of all the sites included in the Tambopata Project study, our Ecoamazonia Lodge Reserve is considered the place where the greatest number of bird species can be observed birds, with 378 different species recorded, making our Ecoamazonia Lodge Reserve the place with the largest number of bird species recorded.
